Management of Kharif Crops Following Rainfall After a Prolonged Dry Spell 21/09/2026

Forecasted rainfall after an extended dry spell brings critical relief to distressed Kharif crops. However, the transition from drought-like conditions to sudden moisture can induce stress, causing heavy flower/square drop, sudden wilting, and severe pest outbreaks. Here is an integrated, practical management roadmap for Soybean, Cotton, and Pigeon Pea (Tur).

1. Soybean Crop Management

  • Light Soils & Scorched Canopy: In shallow soils where plants have severely dried out or yellowed, avoid spending on expensive chemicals as the crop is nearing its physiological maturity.

  • Green Canopy under Spodoptera (Armyworm) Attack: Where plants are still green and holding pods, spray Vitara Plus (50 ml) or Sinjo (10 ml) combined with 13:00:45 (100 g per pump) to protect pods and support seed filling.

  • Heavy Soils / Irrigated Soybean (Final Spray): In plots with adequate residual moisture, control pod-boring caterpillars using Vitara Plus or Sinjo, prevent fungal infections with Nazo Super (20 ml) or Vissel (50 g), and aid grain boldening with 13:00:45 + Bharari (7–8 ml per 15 L pump).

2. Cotton Crop Management

A. Preventing Square & Flower Drop

  • Pre-Rain Preventive Spray: Sudden soil saturation after a severe moisture deficit triggers heavy square abscission. Spray Planofix (5 ml per 20 L pump) + Urea (100 g) immediately before the expected rains.

  • Post-Rain Corrective Action: If pre-rain spraying is missed and heavy square drop occurs, spray Zep (15 ml per pump) to stimulate fresh square initiation and promote flowering.

B. Sucking Pest Control (Thrips & Whiteflies)

  • Thrips Infestation: For curled, brittle, upward-cupped leaves, apply Surrender, Tapas, Novet, or Karate.

  • Whiteflies: Apply Odachi Extra (40 ml per pump) to control eggs, nymphs, and adults. Use tank-mix combinations if both thrips and whiteflies co-exist.

C. Fertilizer & Root Shock Management

  • Under Good Moisture: Broadcast 1 bag of 20:20:0:13 or 24:24:0:8 along with 25 kg of MOP per acre.

  • Under Moderate/Low Rainfall (Drenching): Dissolve 15 kg of 20:20:0:13 (or 24:24:0:8) and 5 kg white potash in 200 liters of water and drench the root zone. Alternatively, drench bio-fertilizers (NPK Boost DX, P-Boost + K-Lift) for economical nutrient uptake.

  • Sudden Wilting (Parawilt / Temperature Shock): Sudden rains followed by intense sunshine cause wilting. Treat affected patches immediately with a spot drench of 19:19:19 (500 g) + Riser (200 ml per pump).

3. Pigeon Pea (Tur / Arhar) Management

  • Fertilization: Broadcast 1 bag of 20:20:0:13 or 24:24:0:8 with half a bag of potash per acre into moist soil.

  • Phytophthora Stem Blight & Fusarium Wilt:

    • Direct spray Ridomil Gold or Cryptox toward the stem base to check Phytophthora lesions.

    • Drench Trichoderma into the soil to suppress Fusarium wilt.

  • Sterility Mosaic Disease (SMD) & Mite Control: Eradicate severely clustered, stunted, flowerless plants immediately. Spray acaricides like Omite, Magister, or Abamectin to eliminate the vector mites.

  • Nipping / Topping: Late-maturing varieties can be topped up to 80–85 days; avoid topping early-maturing varieties past 75 days.
